Reading Programs

Gateways’ individualized reading programs begin with a careful assessment of phonological awareness, decoding skills, vocabulary, comprehension, reading rate, and reading fluency.

Reading program elements may include:

  • Word Attack—learning to use phonics, context clues, and memory to identify words rapidly and accurately
  • Vocabulary Development—broadening word knowledge through study of definitions, analogies, and etymology
  • Comprehension—developing critical thinking skills to understand both stated and implied information
  • Note taking—locating and recording key concepts and structural elements in fiction and nonfiction

All students learn a multiple reading procedure to maximize comprehension and retention. Our REACH® program encourages practice and develops a recreational reading habit.
